Villeneuve-lez-Avignon is a charming medieval village. Home of the cardinals during the 14th century, it offers now a rich architectural heritage.You will discover the Chartreuse (carthusian convent) of the Val de Benediction, one of the largest house of the European Carthusian Order; the Saint Andrew Abbey, its superb gardens and the 14th century Fort, which symbolises the power of the French King had at the time, the collegiate church Our Lady and its cloister, built at the beginning of the 14th century; the Tower Philippe le Bel, only remains of a fortress built in 1292 by order of the King of France; also, the museum Pierre de Luxembourg and its Western masterpieces.
From Villeneuve, many hiking or cycling trails will take you outside the village, to the countryside.
Adjoining to Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, the old village of Les Angles overlooks the majestic Rhone river. You can visit the gothic church, a dungeon, the bread oven, the bell tower and the clock of the ancient city hall as well as the Mascs Tower, built on orders of king Philippe le Bel in 1291.
