Jean Vilar named it “the red Delphes”. Listed as one of the most beautiful French village, Roussillon is located in the heart of the ochre land and is famous for its red colored houses. They offer a wide variety of shades (17 tints of red ochre). Going through its little streets and staircases, gazing at simple and naturally beautiful facades, one can only admire the millenial know-how. In this land, man spontaneously knew how to disappear behind the splendour of a generous nature.

The Ochre Path, fit and marked for hikes, will take you to the “Giant’s Roadway”, in the middle of fairy-tale chimneys and superb sites sculpted by water, wind and man’s hand.

As you visit the Academy of ochre and applied pigments, in the former ochre Factory Mathieu, you will learn about what the industrial adventure was like in this land.

The Academy offers guided visits about the making of ochre, its geology, the ochre heritage and numerous scope of application of color. Colorwash, patina and other technique experts teach workshops and training courses about the art and skills to use ochre pigment.
