Gordes (84)

Incontournable !
GordesGordes is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France. The little paved streets, winding between houses built of dry-stone directly on the rock and the magnificent view over the Calavon valley make this little town extremely pleasant. The impressive size of the castle and the church overlooking the village will certainly surprise you.

In terms of art, Gordes has been the home of many famous painters who found here the inspiration to achieve some of their masterpiece, including among others Andre Lhote, Marc Chagall, Jean Deyrolle, Victor Vasarely and Pol Mara …

Gordes is looking out for its heritage. You will enjoy the visit of:
- the Bories Village, the bories are these peculiar constructions, round-shaped and built of dry stones. The most ancient ones go back to the 15th century. All of them are grouped to form small villages surrounded by walls, sometimes doubled or tripled. Some of these hamlets are like real villages, like the “black village” or the “ village of huts”.
- The abbey of Senanque, located in a green, small valley, surrounded by lavender fields.
- The Moulin de Bouillons: the oldest olive oil mill, from Gallo-Roman architecture yet maintained in a perfect condition.
- The cellars of the Saint Firmin Palace: remodeled over many centuries, they are built from different troglodyte rooms, with subterranean staircases, water tanks, ancient seigneurial olive oil mill. It all forms a network of cellars, spread over 7 levels and 18 meters high.
- The Pol Mara Museum, inside the castle: it shelters almost 200 pieces from the contemporary Flemish painter.
